Traveling ALL DAY. I’m still not home, I’m sitting in my sister’s basement in Manhattan… KS that is. The Little Apple, not the Big Apple.

So as most of you know, I have this crazy cyber-stalkish thing going on with my favorite blogger, SkinnyRunner.

Yep, no denying it. I think she’s smart and quirky and I love to read her posts. It’s like an addiction or something.

A few days ago, I got mentioned! YAY! Okay, well I sent in a few pics of me and Mirda from San Diego. She posted it. I felt special.

So HELLO to my new viewers, y’all are at home here.

In honor of SR and my sis, who I’ve spent the past week with & who is running her first half in the fall, I am going to reblog part of her advice from Feb of 2012 about running your first race. I love it, it’s GREAT stuff. It helped me get through my first marathon! Enjoy!

“So let’s dive in first with running tips; you’ve probably heard of these before, but I steal all my information from others so get used to it.

*Don’t try anything new on race day.  Nothing new: no new shoes, new food, new outfit, new pace, nothing new.

There will inevitably be someone who’s all “I did everything new on race day and still PR’ed.”  Great, good for you.  You want a cookie?

If you’re a new runner, there’s no upside in risking a blister, an upset stomach, or some nice chafing.  Why risk it?

Use a (training) long run as a dress rehearsal and treat it like the race: run your race pace, eat your pre-race breakfast, take in your race fuel, etc so you have a feel for how race day will be.

A gear tip: set out all your gear the night before, from shoes all the way up to headgear.  Plug in your electronics nearby your pile of stuff so in the early morning head fog, you won’t forget anything because it’s all together.

*Start the race at the pace you trained at, not your I’m geeked up and superstoked pace

Everyone does this – we get excited, nervous, full of energy and rip off the line running way too fast, but for first time racers, the faster you start, the slower you’re gonna finish.  Take it easy the first couple miles and then put the hammer down and finish strong.

*Take in fuel whether that’s energy drinks, gels, bites, etc

If you’re running 13 miles, I think you should be taking in calories somehow.  This goes back to doing your dress rehearsal run – figure out in training what type of fuel works best for you.  Some people have iron stomachs and could eat a traffic cone while others can only do one specific brand of energy drink.  Know what works for you.

Now, onto racing etiquette and courtesy:

*Start in the right corral according to the time you are going to run: not your wishful thinking time but a realistic time.

A huge complaint of pretty much all racers is when people don’t start in the correct corral because it makes everyone’s start more chaotic and less efficient.

For example, if this is your first race and you’ve been training to run a 2:00 half, then get in the 2 hr. corral even if you see some 1:50 people that you could beat or you feel really good that day.  Get in the corral that correlates with the pace you’ve trained at.

Whatever you do, don’t hop in the front corrals because you think it’s advantageous to start earlier.  not at all.  Almost all races have chip timing so your time doesn’t start until you cross the start line.

All that happens when you start too fast is that you get passed by a bunch of people (demoralizing) or you start off way too fast and then blow up at the finish.


So pick a corral that’s realistic for you.  You don’t win a race in the first mile; it’s the last ones that are important.  And you can always speed up after the first few miles.

*If you need to stop, walk, stretch, whatever, move over to the side of the course, preferably the right side. 

Don’t ever just stop in the middle of the road -you could get hurt, someone could hit you from behind, etc.  Think of cars driving: if the one in front of you stops suddenly, there’s gonna be a wreck.  So gently move over to the side when you need to stop.  And it’s ok to stop and walk!

*When going through aid stations, you don’t have to grab the first cup.

In big races, there are tons of volunteers handing out cups every 2ish miles so don’t swerve over to grab the first cup you see; go on a little bit where it’s less crowded.  It’s less energy you’re having to expend and lessens the risk of colliding with someone.

*After you drink, look around before tossing the cup. 

It’s usually best to toss it to the side of the road and not just drop it at your feet.  If you see trash cans, try to aim for those. A drinking tip:pinch the cup together to make a little spout which makes it easier to gulp down.

*If you have to hawk a loogie, look behind you before you do.  Move over to the side if need be.

*Thank the volunteers.

They’re out there just as long as you are but not getting any glory or endorphin high so try to smile or say thank you when can.

*At the finish, move on through it.

There’s going to be hundreds of people sprinting in hard behind you so grab your medal, water and space blanket and keep on walking a little further until you’re out of the crowd.  Then stretch out, sit down, get something in your system without being run over by other runners.

To sum it up, it’s important to start in the correct corral and then while racing, think of what you’d want the runner in front of you to do.  Would you want them to suddenly swerve right in front of you, toss their gel wrapper right over their shoulder, stop right in the middle and tie their shoe?”

Now back to me.

I love y’all, you’re fantastic. I plan on a 5:30am run, I have some errands to do (like applying for a job in the fall.. yay college!) in the morning and getting some awesome stuff ready for fundraising for TNT! Then when I get home it’s CrossFit time. No days off! … Well.. Today doesn’t count.

WOD Indiana

The party went fannnntastic last night! It took us about 2ish hours to set up and get everything ready. We had a twister board spray painted in the yard, fishing, some swedish game, corn hole, FOOD… and um… food.


I did the arrangements for this. It just SCREAMS ‘Merica… Doesn’t it? And yes, that is candy corn on the top. Candy corn has found a way to sneak into another holiday and yes, it is still disgusting. 

I also went fishing. For the first 10-20 minutes I didn’t really even get any nibbles, but then when I started using chunks of a hot dog as bait, the fishies couldn’t resist.

Today is wedding day, and I am so excited. The wedding is going to be short, and the reception is going to be bumpin’. My kind of wedding.

I’ve had 3 cups of coffee so far. I want to be awake until the break of dawn dancing.

Shane- You’re an awesome and hilarious guy. It’s kind of strange to see you get married. I remember when we use to play video games in the basement for hours at a time. Or when we would go out on the pond in the little tin boat. But now you’re all grown up and leaving me. Well, okay, that’s a lie. You’re actually moving closer to me. But shh. No one has to know those details.

Brittany- Cousin! Hey- that will be a true statement in a few hours! I’m so happy you’re coming into this family. You’re so fun to be around. You and Shane fit PERFECTLY together. Everyone can see it. When I move up to college and you move to Missouri, you and Shane need to come visit or vice-versa. Speaking of traveling – I hope he takes you somewhere nice for your Honeymoon!

(Pretend ‘Merica is white…)

You know where my happy place is?

The beach… Or the mountains. Really dependent on the weather.

But guess where I ran this morning… and yes, you have a 50/50 chance of getting it right or wrong.

Sam and I geared up in our PRO Compression and Brooks PureCadence before we set off. Just walking through the sand sucked. And my knee was killin’ me. Joy, right?

When we started off running it was super hard. We ended up running right along the water, where the more compact sand was. Sam and I ended up splitting up because I kept stopping to look at rocks/ pick up glass (… oohhhh shiny things…).

Sam did her workout, while I took my shoes off to go look for more rocks play in the water.

It took me almost half and hour before I caught up to my mom who was looking for glass as well. We slowly walked back to where our towels and chairs were set up, while we stared at the ground… still lookin’.

When we got home, I went downstairs to start my own CrossFit workout.

By the end of the WOD, I was DRENCHED in sweat. Don’t believe me? Fine. I took a yucky selfieeee (sorry, I have to exaggerate the e in a Valley Girl accent) for all of you none-believers.


We helped Shane and Brittany set up the reception area.. it looks stunning!

Now we are about to party until the break of day to celebrate ‘Merica. Me and like 30 some of my closest friends whom I’ve never met. WHOO!

Happy Rest Day!

Yesterday, I ran a 5K benefitting the Interfaith Housing System here in Dodge!

As you remember from my list, “10 Things I Suck At,” I suck at 5Ks. This was no different.

I kept a super slow pace of 8:23, finishing in 26 minutes flat. About the same pace I started out at for my first 8 miles of the San Diego Marathon. Go me.

The course was the course I used for my 5K, Race for a Cure, but backwards. There was a strong South wind so guess what, the course went straight South for a mile! It felt like I was running into a brick wall. Not necessarily awesome.

There were a lot of stops to get colored up! They used colored water, so if you threw it in the dryer once you got home, it would be permanent. I had them SOAK my shirt and my white PROCompression socks! By the way, PROCompression, I need new socks…

OH. And there were these two really annoying kids that would hurry and run as fast as they could to pass me, but then they would walk. Then when I would pass them again, they would get all upset that a girl was passing them, so they would sprint past me again, and then walk… etc. It’s safe to say I killed them in the end. I sprinted past them the last half-mile. ENDURANCE FOR LIFEEEE.

“Deck of Death Pleasure”

We paired up and had a deck of cards per pair. Whatever suit you had, that was the workout you did and the number of the card was how many reps. We took turns on each workout, but ran and did double-unders together!

My partner was Paige and we finished the deck in 24:30! Paige got a nice mix of the different workouts, I pretty much had all of the toes to bar… the one movement I dread.


So coming off of all of this talk about toes to bar, it’s time to talk about things I suck at!

We all have our strengths and weaknesses, so maybe one day when I need a pick-me-up I will talk about things I’m good at. But today I’m pretty okay with making fun of myself. So here we go.


  1. I suck at anything having to deal with sports. I have ZERO hand eye coordination, so if you are throwing something at me to catch or asking me to dodge something… No. Just no. Most of the time when people throw things at me, they go WAY over my head to where I would have no shot at catching it anyways.
  2. I suck at pull ups or climbing rope. I have to use a band to get through workouts involving pull ups. Most of the time I’m not even tall enough to reach the bar. Now rope climbs… Well I can get up the rope like once. Okay… that was a lie. Halfway. So I have to do the modified version where you lay on the ground and only use your arms to pull you up and back down. Weak arms fo lifeee.
  3. I suck at drinking liquids/ eating. Sometimes I always wind up with my food/drink somewhere on my pants or shirt. Like today after the workout, I basically poured my entire cup of water down my right side. Awesome. Or during supper I miss my mouth… Like every night.
  4. I suck at swimming. I can float/wade really well, so you don’t have to worry about me drowning. But ACTUAL swimming… Hah. Okay here’s the deal. I HAVE to plug my nose. I do NOT understand how people can keep water out of their noses. It’s like my nose is a vacuum that sucks in as much water as possible when I dive or do flips underwater. So that’s probably one of the main reasons why I can’t swim like a normal person. I’m just awful at it.
  5. I suck at running 5k’s. I have one today, but let me tell you. They hurt me. It’s just you have to keep a fairly fast pace through ALL of it since it’s so short. I’m not a fast person. I’m SLOW. That’s why I became a distance runner. Cause really it matters about how many miles rather than how fast (to me at least.) It’s more of game with me. But 5k’s… It’s like boom you start and then boom you’re done within 30 minutes or less.
  6. I suck at remembering things. That’s why when you see my planner throughout the school year, it is jam packed with what time I need to be where, days I have tests, future plans, reminders to myself of what I need to do later… etc. If I didn’t write things down, I would be a lost little puppy, wandering about.
  7. I suck at English/ Reading. Okay, this topic is kind of controversial since what I do with my free time is write, but when you look at my ACT scores, these are my two LOWEST subjects. They seriously brought my score down. When it comes to reading, I’m slow. I take my time to dissect almost every single word. It takes me FOREVER to get through a book. I know people who can just run their finger down a page and understand everything that that certain page was about. I’m so jealous.
  8. I suck at walking up stairs. I trip almost every single time I go up stairs. So when I remember that I suck at it while going up a flight, I basically have to do high-knees to make sure my feet get on that step.
  9. I suck at being consistent – on some things. I can be on time consistently, but my schedule every day is never consistent. At our CrossFit gym , there are 4-5 separate classes you can go to. I change up whatever class I go to ALL the time. I tried a morning class once, but I suck at waking up as well, so that stopped after one time.
  10. I suck at cleaning my room. I go through periods where I don’t clean my room. I just throw crap everywhere thinking, “I’ll clean it up tomorrow.” But it gets to the point where it STRESSES me out. I won’t even go in my room unless it is to sleep. When it gets to be that point, I usually get the urge to clean at about 10pm. Awesome.


Well there is my short list of things I suck at!

I have a question, is anybody running the 5K this afternoon? If you haven’t heard about it, it starts at Cavalier Field with Registration starting at 3pm, the race starting at 4pm! It’s a color run, so wear crappy clothes. I have no idea of who is all going, so PLEASE someone show up so I can run with you. I need a running partner… 🙂
